Worimi Conservation Lands - beach driving

Beach driving rules

  • Drive according to conditions - speed limit of 40km/h applies, 20km/h within 100m of pedestrians or vehicles.
  • Give way to pedestrians at all times.
  • Avoid reckless driving - for your safety and the safety of others.
  • Avoid launching off dune slopes.
  • Be prepared for dunes to conceal other vehicles - consider fitting your vehicle with a flag.
  • Do not drive over vegetation - help keep dunes intact by following previous tracks.
  • Do not drive over shell accumulations - you may damage cultural sites.

  • There are two vehicle permits available for the Worimi Conservation Lands (WCL): a Beach Vehicle Permit for 4WD access to Stockton Beach; and a Recreational Vehicle Area Permit enabling RTA conditionally registered vehicles to access the Recreational Vehicle Area of the WCL.

    Beach Vehicle Permits

From 1 June 2007 you will require a Worimi Conservation Lands Beach Vehicle Permit for vehicle entry and beach driving at Stockton Beach in the Worimi Conservation Lands.

These permits replace the previous Port Stephens Council Stockton Beach Vehicle Permits. They do not cover vehicle entry into any other national park or council reserve.

NPWS Annual Passes are not valid for this park

Revenue from the permit is used to maintain facilities in Worimi Conservation Lands, and to improve public access, visitor information and pest control programs.

    NPWS Pensioner Discount

To obtain your pensioner discount, you must show a current NSW Certificate of Registration for your nominated vehicle, to which the RTA has applied the pensioner discount.

    Please note

The permit can only be used on the nominated vehicle as specified on the permit. It is not transferable to any other vehicle and cannot be altered.

    Recreational Vehicle Area permits

All RTA conditionally registered vehicles will require a Worimi Conservation Lands Recreational Vehicle Area Permit to enable access into the Recreational Vehicle Area (RVA) in the Worimi Conservation Lands. Unregistered vehicles are not to be taken, driven or ridden into the RVA, or any other area in the Worimi Conservation Lands.

RTA conditionally registered vehicles are quad bikes, motorbikes, dune buggies and other recreational vehicles. The RTA Conditional Registration must be endorsed for the Stockton Beach RVA.

RVA Permits do not permit access to areas outside the RVA in Worimi Conservation Lands. Refer to the map (link at bottom of this page) for the location of the Recreational Vehicle Area. If you are transporting your recreational vehicle via another vehicle, you will also require a Beach Vehicle Permit to cover your vehicle.

To obtain your Worimi Conservation Lands RVA Permit you must show a current RTA Certificate of Conditional Registration endorsed for the Stockton Beach RVA.

In late 2007 the RVA was amended to enhance public safety and the protection of natural and cultural values. This change also provides increased recreational opportunities for RV operators.

This means the area where people can ride conditionally registered quad bikes, motor bikes, dune buggies and other recreational vehicles increased by 48%. The RVA retains 4kms of beachfront south of Lavis Lane to the 'Sygna Wreck', and now includes the high dune area south-west of the Lavis Lane entrance.
