The Tilligerry Peninsula
On the south-western shores of Port Stephens lies the Tilligerry Peninsula. The peninsula is a beautiful, tranquil, untouched place surrounded on three sides by the waters of Port Stephens and the Tilligerry Creek.
Tanilba Bay greets all with its stone centenary gates, built in 1931 to commemorate the centenary of the arrival of Lieutenant William Caswell arrival in Tanilba. That same year the stone water arches, incorporating the bollards from HMAS Sydney, were erected to greet people arriving by water. The decorative stonework, which is a feature in this area, reaches its greatest whimsy in the 'Mosaic Temple of the Stork'. This contemplative structure is next to historic Tanilba House – one of the first homes built on the peninsula.
Lemon Tree Passage is a quiet township located on the tip of the Tilligerry Peninsula and offers a variety of gentle, coastal walking trails and boardwalks through Koala territory. A central boat ramp provides direct access to the port's mainstream making this a popular spot for boat launching.
Sit on the foreshore munching fish and chips and spot the dolphins as they cruise by. The foreshore is dotted with native bushland and there are many spots to stop for a picnic or just take a stroll to absorb the peaceful surroundings.
