Port Stephens is now hosting the “Festival of the Whales” during the spring school holidays from 28th September – 10th October 2008. Celebrating the return of the whales, the aim of this festival is to not only create awareness of the significance of the migrating Humpback whales to Port Stephens but to also allow the public to see these beautiful mammals in their natural habit before they head south to the Antarctic to fight for their lives.
While the season begins in May with the Northern migration, from September to mid November nearly 7,000 Humpback whales will return past Port Stephens on their southern migration. The adult whales have been mating and calving in the warm waters off the Barrier Reef during our winter and are now on there way to the southern feeding grounds. The Humpbacks eat very little along their 10,000 kilometre round trip and rely on gorging themselves on tonnes of tiny shrimp called krill that abound in the Antarctic waters during the Australian summer months.
This year we are expecting more than 500 nursing females will pass by the port with their newborn calves and at one and a half tonnes in weight and three and a half metres in length, these are pretty big babies. With mum feeding at nearly 400 litres of fatty milk each day the calf is gaining weight almost as quickly as mum is losing weight!
We see most of these mother calf pairs travelling very close to the land on their journey south. Junior is getting a crash course on navigation from mum along the way and the bays and islands offshore of Port Stephens offer good protection from the big predators like the Killer Whales. This is a really fantastic time to see some amazing whale activity as the Humpback mums encourage their youngsters to jump around a lot and develop their muscles.
