Beyond the sand and water
It’s hard not to be swept up in the beautiful coastline of Port Stephens, but this region offers visitors more than just a beachside escape. From world-class golf courses to deluxe dining, trendy bars and spectacular wildlife activities, the area is renowned for its wonderfully diverse range of experiences.
Avid golfers will be impressed by the remarkable golf courses in Port Stephens. Located on the skirt of the Tomaree National Park is Nelson Bay Golf Club, a 27-hole championship golf course, featuring an abundance of wildlife including kangaroos, wallabies, koalas and native birds. This golf course was ranked in the top 50 courses in Australia for rounds costing under $50. Alternatively, enjoy a round at Horizons Golf Resort, a stunning and popular 18-hole course located in Salamander Bay. There’s also the 18-hole championship golf course at Pacific Dunes, which was ranked number 26 in Golf Digest’s Australia’s top 100 golf courses for its challenging fairways. For those less experienced putters, you can always play a friendly game at David Graham’s Putt Putt.
No trip to Port Stephens is complete without a visit to the famous SPLASH Waterpark (seasonal over summer). This incredible inflatable waterpark on the sea is the perfect place to spend the warmer months with your family and friends. If you prefer to stay dry, visit Toboggan Hill Park, a fun, adventure-filled activity park located in Nelson Bay. Set amongst natural bushland just off Salamander Way, it features a toboggan track, mini golf, giant maze, tractor ride and indoor rock climbing.
Animal lovers will enjoy getting up close and personal with the native and domestic farm animals at Oakvale Wildlife Park. Set on 25 acres of natural bushland, visitors can bottle feed baby farm animals and learn more about the wildlife including ducklings, rabbits, goats, sheep, cattle and horses, koalas, kangaroos, wombats, emus, dingos and birds.
Port Stephens is also a blossoming culinary region, boasting upmarket bars, wineries and breweries. Nestled within the Hamptons-chic haven that is The Anchorage Port Stephens, Moby’s Bar is the best place to sample a selection of the world's finest whiskies, chic cocktails and beautiful wines. Pair with a platter of antipasto or indulge in a dozen freshly shucked Sydney Rock Oysters. On a sunny day, head to Terrace Bar at Bannisters and enjoy a delicious range of fused Mediterranean and modern Australian dishes, while you admire the pretty water and pool views. The laidback atmosphere is also ideal for sipping on a selection of their classic cocktails.
