Our Story

Red Neds Gourmet Pie Shop opened its doors in 1997. The pie shop has become famous not only locally but world-wide with many visitors from overseas. We pride ourselves on the quality of our products and continually strive to improve.

Since the business began, we have won well over 100 national awards, including 21 Gold Medals, a welcome tribute!

More importantly we have won a faithful following amongst our patrons.

How Red Neds got its name.

The shop was opened by Barry Kelly, a master pie maker. Barry’s last name was Kelly, synonymous with one of Australia’s infamous folk law heroes, Ned Kelly. Ned Kelly’s fathers name was “Red” hence the name “Red Neds”. A life size model of Ned Kelly stands proudly outside the shop.

The legend lives on ..

Sam Leitch took over in 2019 and continues the tradition of excellence, winning 16 medals in the Best Aussie Pie Competition.

The “Original Gourmet Pie Shop” in Nelson Bay lives on!

What makes our pies so great?

Start with quality ingredients and make the pies with care using our own secret recipes.

We bake up to 45 varieties of pie daily using the best locally sourced ingredients where possible and we grow many of our vegetables and herbs in our own organic garden.
